  • Tennessee Tech U. Unveils New Athletics Logos (NCAA)
    August 31, 2006
A brand new Golden Eagle has "officially" taken flight at Tennessee Tech. The Tech Athletics Department officially presented the new brand for the Golden Eagles during pregame festivities in Regions Bank Tailgate Park prior the football season opener against Chattanooga. "Fans may have caught a few glimpses of the new logos in a variety of places in the past few weeks on material that had to be prepared for the long-term, but we presented all the marks for their first official appearance tonight," said Mark Wilson, TTU Director of Athletics, who has been the driving force behind the change.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "The New Fashions of College"
    August 31, 2006
Strike up the marching band for the Uni Watch fight song because it's that time of year again, when student-athletes hit the books and Uni Watch takes a look at what players will be wearing on the gridiron this season. Our first stop, of course, is in Oregon, where Nike once again has used the Ducks as a design laboratory, with predictably laughable results. Uni Watch knows better by now than to attempt any rational critique of this school's attire, especially as these aren't really uniforms -- they're costumes. So let's all just sit back and enjoy the ride as they continue to dig the sports world's deepest aesthetic hole, with no bottom in sight. And hey, it could have been worse -- here are some of the other design concepts Nike considered, and the tapered uni numbers are actually an improvement over the ones used in last year's Civil War game. Granted, that's sort of like saying the weather in Phoenix is refreshingly mild compared with Death Valley's, but Uni Watch figures we have to take these small morsels of sanity wherever we find them. (For more on the Ducks' new design, and the thinking that went into it, look here.)

  • FOXSports.com - "Five Worst College Uniforms"
    August 29, 2006
The season's right around the corner, and as always, it's gonna be a fun one. A ton of seniors to root on, newcomers to watch, programs on the rise, and a bunch of good stuff to watch out for. So, let's see who made my lists. Here are the top five schools with bad uniforms (due to the new 2006 Oregon uniforms being weird, their eligibility for this award shall now be retired, as long as Nike's in charge, their threads are doomed) ...

  • Buffalo Bills to Wear Throwback Uniforms (National Football League)

  • Idaho arenafootball2 Franchise Still Looking for Name (arenafootball2)
    August 25, 2006
We can only hope that Boise's arenafootball2 franchise moves more quickly once it actually takes the field. It's been more than two months since the city was awarded a franchise, and the franchise lacks any shred of identity. It has no name. No logo. No color scheme. No ticket plan. What the team does have is plenty of interested fans for its inaugural season, which kicks off next March. More than 1,600 entries were submitted through the Idaho Statesman's Web site, www.idahostatesman.com, in the franchise's "Name the Team" contest.

The Pooh bear is dead. The Bruins' third sweater, honey gold with the smiley Pooh head centered on the chest, is officially being mothballed. Beginning Oct. 26, when the Canadiens come to Causeway Street, the Bruins will sport vintage renditions of their spoked-B sweaters, styled after the ones Bobby Orr and his fellow Black-and-Gold swashbucklers wore in the late 1960s. Think: split neckline with string lace. (Bring back a bench-clearing donnybrook and the picture is a Picasso!)

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "Catch Them If You Can"
    August 17, 2006
It's not easy being a catcher -- the foul tips, the collisions at the plate, all those jokes about "catcher's speed," the endless "tools of ignorance" comments. But in recent years, catchers have enjoyed a small measure of uni-related revenge. Most players aren't allowed to personalize their uniforms -- no inscriptions on caps, no cutting slits in your sleeves, etc. -- but more and more catchers are adding a personal touch to that most utilitarian of accessories, the chest protector.

  • Petition Seeks to Cancel "Redskins" Trademark (National Football League)
    August 9, 2006
Six American Indian young people from across the country will file a joint petition with the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Aug. 11 for the cancellation of the Washington Redskins football organization (Pro-Football Inc.) trademarked term, “Redskins.” In 1992, a group of prominent American Indian leaders filed a similar petition that is still pending 14 years later. Both petitions call for the cancellation of the federal government’s registration of the Washington “Redskins” trademark because its use is disparaging to American Indians. The petitions cite extensive evidence concerning the history of the use of the term “Redskin” and public perception of the objectionable term. Both sets of petitioners are represented pro bono by the law firm of Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP.

    August 3, 2006
You people sure aren't shy about expressing your opinions. Uni Watch is referring to the avalanche of e-mails that arrived in response to last column's call for "worst uniform ever" nominees. So many readers sounded off on this robust topic -- many of them nominating two, four, or even a dozen different teams -- that Uni Watch had to enlist the aid of an intern to help sift through all the data.
