  • DePaul U. Unveils New Men's and Women's Basketball Uniforms and Commemorative Patches (NCAA)
    October 31, 2006
The 2006-07 DePaul men's and women's basketball uniforms feature a commemorative patch to remember a pair of former DePaul coaches in Ray Meyer and Maggie Dixon. Each patch was unveiled at the annual Tip-Off Luncheon on Tuesday. The men's team features a redesigned uniform that was inspired from the days when Meyer was head coach at DePaul. The jerseys have stripes running along the sides reminiscent of the Blue Demons' run of excellence in the late 70's and early 80's. The memorial patch itself is designed in a red, white and blue basketball with "42" in the top panel, "Coach" in the middle panel and "724" in the lower panel. The "42" is for Meyer's tenure as head coach at DePaul from 1942-84 while the "724" is for his 724 victories with the Blue Demons. The center panel with "Coach" refers to Meyer as he was known in a single word. Meyer, at age 92, passed away on St. Patrick's Day in March.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "A New Look For the NBA"
    October 31, 2006
Quick, what's the easiest way to change the look of every single basketball game? Answer: Change the basketball, of course, which is just what the NBA has done for this season. But while the new ball has received mixed reviews from players, most observers have overlooked the potentially huge Uni Watch implications. To wit: 21 of the league's 30 teams have ball-inclusive logos, all of which are now outdated. Many teams also have a ball depicted on their uniforms, which means the uni ball and the game ball no longer match. And what about the O'Brien Trophy?

Scoring points and grabbing rebounds are great in basketball, but what does it matter if you don't look great in the process? The Washington Wizards last night offered fans a glimpse of the team's most recent contribution to the NBA fashion landscape, unveiling new alternate jerseys featuring bronze-toned tops and black shorts. • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "Photo Reveals Double Curse in '86"
    October 18, 2006
If you want to imbue a discussion with an air of gravitas, you start by identifying the main character by his full name: George Herman Ruth. Dwight David Eisenhower. Homer Jay Simpson. So consider the case of one William Joseph Buckner, who almost two decades ago (the precise anniversary is Wednesday, Oct. 25) bent over to field a grounder hit by Mookie Wilson. We all know what happened after that -- you've seen the video a few jillion times, you've read about the scapegoating, and the subsequent reaction to the scapegoating. After 20 years of scrutiny under the electron microscope of modern media, the Buckner play has been dissected so thoroughly that you pretty well know everything about it. Well, almost everything.

  • New Britain Rock Cats Unveil New Logo (Eastern League (baseball))
    October 17, 2006
Over the past decade, the New Britain Rock Cats have dramatically transformed their Eastern League franchise by moving into a new stadium, affiliating with the American League's 4-time Central Division champions, the Minnesota Twins, and welcoming aboard new, forward-thinking owners who have worked hard to establish a special bond with the baseball fans and families of central Connecticut and western Massachusetts. The last ten years have seen significant growth and progress in New Britain and now - with the 2006 Season in the books and franchise attendance records smashed yet again - the Rock Cats have decided to update their existing primary logo with an adjusted design that more accurately reflects the franchise's dynamic evolution. The longstanding Rock Cats logo featured a blocked "NB" with popular team mascot "Rocky's" image wearing sunglasses - displayed in the center. The new, refreshed design continues to feature the enormously popular mascot, but removes the sunglasses and gives him a fuller and friendlier rendering. In the updated version, the mischievous Rocky appears game-ready as he laughingly eyes the competition while pounding his baseball glove. In addition, the old primary logo contained no wording to identify the franchise; the updated brand identifier carries the words "New Britain Rock Cats" above "Rocky's" new furry tail.

  • Dallas Morning News - "Sabres Have Got The Look" (National Hockey League)
    October 14, 2006
Like the new Sabres uniforms? Me, neither. But if Reebok – or RBK, as it's known in hockey – gets its way, NHL fans will see a lot more of the look. You know the look, where stripes are replaced by swooshes, where odd colors are placed under the arms or around the shoulders or on the pant leg. It's all the craze in college football, where Texas Tech and Oregon and Miami throw out uniform ideas so bizarre they were rejected by the Arena Football League. And the kids today love this stuff, we are told.

  • Chicago Unveils Logo for 2016 Olympics Games Bid
    October 13, 2006
Officials on Thursday unveiled the official logo for the city's 2016 Olympic Games bid, a stylized Olympic torch with a distinctly Chicago look. The base of the torch is blue--representing the color of Lake Michigan's water--and green, a bow to Chicago's park system. But the "flame" of the logo is what gives it a real Windy City flavor. It is an impressionistic rendering of the city's skyline, with a Sears Tower flavor, that was designed to represent Chicago's renowned architecture and the vitality that emerged after the Great Fire of 1871.

  • U. of Alabama Unveil Commemorative Men's Football Uniforms (NCAA)
    October 11, 2006
Some college football teams wear “throwback" jerseys to commemorate their past. The Crimson Tide doesn’t really have that option. “What are they going to throw back to?" asked Kenneth Gaddy, director of the Paul W. Bryant Museum. “They wore white helmets for a while. Other than that, the uniform hasn’t changed a whole lot since the leather helmet days." Nonetheless, the University of Alabama football team will unveil a “new" jersey for Saturday’s game against the Ole Miss Rebels. The jersey is described as a “commemorative" garment intended to honor the 25th anniversary of Coach Bryant’s 315th win and his final Southeastern Conference championship team from 1981. The jersey will feature houndstooth trim around the collar, the most significant change to the uniform.

  • Wheeling Nailers Unveil 15th Anniversary Logo (ECHL (hockey))
    October 9, 2006

The Nailers also took the opportunity to unveil the team’s new logo that was commissioned to commemorate professional hockey’s 15th season in Wheeling. Ohio Valley resident Josh Bommer designed the logo, which incorporates images of both the Fort Henry and Wheeling Suspension bridges and even includes a pair of wings in homage to the original Thunderbirds franchise that first came to Wheeling in 1992.

  • New York Times - "At Shea, the Name of the Game is Color War" (Major League Baseball/National League)
    October 8, 2006
When the New York Mets took the field at Shea Stadium on Wednesday for Game 1 of the National League Division Series, Paul Lukas, an ardent lifelong fan, was in the loge, wearing a blue Mr. Met cap and cheering the players on. It was a beautiful afternoon for baseball, with red, white and blue bunting fringing the green grass beneath a deep blue sky. But amid all the color and pageantry, Mr. Lukas could not help feeling rankled by the inclusion of one nontraditional hue in the team’s uniforms: black, the dominant color in the Mets’ caps.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "The Latest in NHL Fashion"
    October 4, 2006
For the past several weeks, the player names on the backs of the Red Wings' jerseys have been rendered in straight block lettering. But for the better part of the next year, they'll use vertically arched lettering. And you know what that means. Uni Watch is referring, naturally, to the start of the NHL's regular season, which gets underway tonight. The Red Wings are one of several teams that mark the occasion by switching to their standard nameplate style after using a simpler format in the preseason. Another example: The Rangers, who've been using cheapo shiny, screened-on lettering in the preseason but will now switch to sewn-on lettering. It's basically the NHL version of how the Steelers don't wear front helmet numbers in the preseason but then add the numbers once the games count.

  • Florida State U. Unveil All-Black Men's Football Uniforms (NCAA)
    October 3, 2006
The special tribute uniform will be all black with garnet numbers and gold trimming, and feature the word “unconquered” on one pants leg and “Seminoles" on the other. Members of the Seminole Tribe of Florida are known as “the unconquered people” because of their long history of overcoming great adversity. Dating back to the early 1800s, they endured three wars with the U.S. government, resisted numerous efforts to relocate them to federal reservations in the West, and ultimately made their home in one of the world’s most inhospitable environments, the Florida Everglades. That they have not only survived, but thrived all while maintaining their fierce independence and rich culture is a tribute to their courage and perseverance. Their indomitable spirit is one that FSU proudly seeks to emulate in all of its endeavors.
