Watch by Paul Lukas - "The Storied Tradition of MLB
Rookie Hazing"
September 28, 2007
Halloween is still a month away, but the
costumes are already out in full force outside major
league baseball clubhouses. And that, of course, means
we're deep in the thick of rookie hazing, a
time-honored MLB rite of passage in which rookies --
from the lowliest September call-ups to international
stars like Dice-K -- are forced to dress up (or down,
as the case might be). The stunt is usually executed
right before the last road trip of the year, so the
rooks have to wear their costumes while hauling their
luggage out to the team bus, at the airport (bonus
points for teams going to or from Toronto, since the
rooks will have to go through customs), and on the
plane. Just about every team gets in on the hazing
routine, but it's the Yankees -- their commitment to
excellence extending to every corner of the game --
who've set the highest standard in recent years. In
2005, the rookies wore cheerleader outfits, and last
year the players had to dress up as George
Steinbrenner. This year, they went for a "Wizard of
Oz" theme.

Converse
College to Choose New Nickname (NCAA)
September 28, 2007
The Converse Cougars? Has a nice ring to it.
The Converse Sirens? Clever. The Converse Cannibals?
Hmm … maybe not. Hundreds of new mascot suggestions,
including those three, have poured into Converse
College's Web site in the last four days, since the
school began soliciting public advice for a new
nickname. For the past 34 years, the school has been
known as the Converse All-Stars, a knock-off of the
popular shoe. Nominations for new names are being
taken online, at
www.converse.edu/athletics, until Oct. 5. Then,
after a series of public votes, the school will unveil
its new mascot on Oct. 23 at the school's volleyball
match against Limestone College. "We believe this is
the right time for Converse to select a new mascot,"
said Beth Lancaster, the school's director of
communications. "We have a new athletic director
(former Dorman basketball coach Joy Couch). We're in
Division II; we have a new conference membership.
Converse is really trying hard to elevate the
athletics program."

Watch by Paul Lukas - "Skating On Thin Ice"
September 27, 2007
Hockey is all wet -- literally. The combination
of intense activity, indoor arenas, and full-body
uniforms with loads of padding creates a lot of sweat,
plus the skate blades are constantly creating ice
spray, which condenses as it hits the players. So when
the Reebok folks were designing a new uniform system
for the NHL, they devised a series of
moisture-repellant fabrics. For months now league
officials have been doing this little party trick
where they pour a glass of water onto one of the new
jerseys, so everyone can see how the water rolls right
off. But here's the thing: All that moisture has to go
somewhere. And according to a growing chorus of
complaints from NHL players, it's going mainly into
their gloves and skates, which have become a sloshy,
saturated mess. Another unintended consequence of the
new uniforms: They're so stretchy and, in some cases,
so prone to tearing along the seams that they're easy
to pull over an opponent's face during a fight, which
can lead to major problems.

Worcester
Sharks Unveil New Uniforms (American Hockey
League)
September 27, 2007
Worcester Sharks President and CEO Michael T.
Lehr, in conjunction with the American Hockey League,
unveiled the club’s new jerseys for 2007-08 as part of
Reebok’s new Rbk EDGE Uniform System. All 29 teams in
the AHL, as well as all 30 teams in the National
Hockey League, will wear the new uniforms this season
as part of the Rbk program. This league-wide uniform
innovation was established by Reebok with the National
Hockey League earlier this year with performance and
safety at the forefront of the design process. After
more than two years of research and testing, the Rbk
EDGE Uniform System will debut this fall in only two
leagues worldwide: the NHL and the American Hockey
League.

New
Orleans Hornets Unveil New Secondary Logo
(National Basketball Association)
September 27, 2007
A new chapter in Hornets history was unveiled
today at the Alario Center when Tyson Chandler emerged
from the locker room wearing a familiar home white
uniform with a new twist – a Fleur de Bee patch.
Designed by Hornets Executive Officer of the Board
Chad Shinn and consultants from the NBA and Adidas,
the patch will be worn on the team’s home and road
jerseys this season and illustrates the passion the
entire organization has for the people of Louisiana
and the city of New Orleans. Long associated with the
Crescent City, the fleur de lis has taken on
additional significance post-Katrina as a symbol of
the region’s recovery. As an adaptation of that famous
symbol, the Hornets’ Fleur de Bee speaks directly to
the connection this team feels with the city and its
proud heritage.

Iowa
State U. Unveils New Athletic Logos, Uniforms
(NCAA)
September 27, 2007
Iowa State unveiled its new look Wednesday,
introducing a cardinal football helmet with an I-State
logo. Athletic director Jamie Pollard said during a
news conference that the selection culminated a
six-month process. All of the school's athletic
coaches were asked for input, and more than 35,000
votes were cast on the school's Web site. Pollard said
the I-State emblem will give the school a more
distinguishable identity that could help in retailing
and recruiting. "We feel this logo really identifies
Iowa State athletics," Pollard said. "And that logo
will become our primary mark for the athletics
program."

Manitoba
Moose Unveil New Rbk Edge Uniforms (American
Hockey League)
September 25, 2007
The Manitoba Moose, in conjunction with the
American Hockey League, unveiled their new jerseys for
2007-08 as part of Reebok's new Rbk EDGE Uniform
System. All 29 teams in the AHL, as well as all 30
teams in the National Hockey League, will wear the new
uniforms this season as part of the Rbk program.
Manitoba's new uniforms feature changes to the
striping on the sleeves and base of the jersey. The
Moose will maintain their basic logo and colours of
black, forest green, bronze, and white. This
league-wide uniform innovation was established by
Reebok with the National Hockey League earlier this
year with performance and safety at the forefront of
the design process. After more than two years of
research and testing, the Rbk EDGE Uniform System will
debut this fall in only two leagues worldwide: the NHL
and the American Hockey League.

Pittsburgh
Penguins Players Say New Uniforms All Wet
(National Hockey League)
September 23, 2007
The Penguins agree, pretty much to a man, that
the high-tech sweaters they will be wearing this
season are lighter and more comfortable than the ones
they replaced. They also concur that the new sweaters
are extremely effective at repelling moisture, exactly
as planned. Trouble is, quite a few have concluded
that is not necessarily a good thing. Right winger
Mark Recchi, for one, understands what the league was
trying to accomplish by adopting a sweater that does
not absorb fluids, but does not think the designers
took into account the moisture -- to wit, perspiration
-- generated under a player's uniform. "[The sweaters]
don't soak anything in, which I guess is what they
wanted," Recchi said. "But the problem is, it goes
through all of your equipment. It goes into your
gloves, goes into your skates." And eventually
saturates the leather in both, leaving the players
feeling as if their hands and feet are immersed in
liquid. Perhaps because, at least in some cases, they
are.

Portland
Pirates Unveil New Rbk Edge Uniforms (American
Hockey League)
September 21, 2007
The Portland Pirates, the American Hockey
League affiliate of the Stanley Cup Champion Anaheim
Ducks, unveiled their new Rbk EDGE Uniforms for the
2007-08 season today. The jerseys feature the Anaheim
Ducks logo on the right and left shoulders, a new
accented piping design down the left and right sides
with the team's full- color logo on the front chest.
In addition, there will be a 2007 Anaheim Ducks
Stanley Cup Champion patch on the back of the jersey
and a new jersey sponsor, McDonald's, will have a
patch placed on the front right chest. After more than
two years of research and testing, the Rbk EDGE
Uniform System, with performance and safety at the
forefront of the design process, will debut this fall
in only two leagues worldwide: the NHL and the
American Hockey League.

Watch by Paul Lukas - "Getting Equipped With the
Giants"
September 21, 2007
At the risk of offending a noble fraternity,
Uni Watch always has thought being a baseball
equipment manager is a pretty cushy job. You mostly
have to make sure everyone's wearing the right jersey,
that nobody's name is misspelled (oops), and that all
the batting helmets are polished (well, almost all of
them). In basketball, it's even easier, since there
are no helmets or other gear to keep track of -- it's
mostly just a matter of remembering who likes to wear
high socks. But football -- now there's a sport that
really puts the "equipment" in equipment manager.
You've got more than 50 players to keep track of, a
wide range of helmet models (many of them with
inflatable padding, and some of them equipped with
radio receivers), an even wider range of facemasks,
loads of pads, a variety of different jersey tailoring
templates, players who insist on having the
tightest-fitting uniforms possible, a coaching staff
that has to be outfitted in a rotating array of
league-approved clothing, and a league office that's
notoriously nitpicky about the smallest visual
details. It's a demanding job, one that's usually
split up among several people.

Mississauga
St. Michael's Majors Unveil New Uniforms
(Ontario Hockey League)
September 19, 2007
It's an exciting time for the Mississauga St.
Michael's Majors! With their 2007-08 season kicking
off on Friday via a date in St. Catharines with the
IceDogs, the club is ready to officially unveil their
new uniform design. The first sneak peek took place
yesterday as the new jerseys were presented on Rogers
Television Peel's daytime program. The jerseys
continue to display the "M" on the chest, to signify
the team's affiliation with St. Michael's College
School. However, the "M" has been given a Mississauga
twist as there are more layers within and the gold has
been taken out, with blue becoming more prominent. The
horizontal stripes that were present on the bottom
have been removed and bolts of baby-blue now jut
across the front and back of the jersey. Also, the
shoulders will be adorned with the school crest on one
side and the shamrock logo on the other.

Chicago
Unveils New Olympic Logo (Olympics)
September 19, 2007
It's take two for Chicago's Olympic logo in the
city's bid for the 2016 summer games. CBS 2 Chief
Correspondent Jay Levine was at the dramatic
unveiling. A crowd of seventh and eighth graders at
Disney Magnet School counted down to a round of
applause as a sheet came down to reveal the new logo.
It's a white, six-pointed star surrounded by a
vertical band of colors including yellow for energy,
red for passion, blue for parks and green for the
lake. In May, the International Olympic Committee said
Chicago couldn't use its first design, a torch whose
flame represents the city skyline. The IOC said its
rules don't allow logos that contain the Olympic
symbol, motto, flag or other imagery including a
flame, torch or medal.

new accented piping design as well as the Monarchs'
lion logo on the front.

St.
Louis Blues Unveil New Uniforms (National
Hockey League)
September 15, 2007
The St. Louis Blues introduced the new RBK
Blues uniform today at Scottrade Center prior to the
final scrimmage of the Wendy Pleau Determination Cup.
The Blues' RBK Edge uniform system -- jersey, pants
and socks, each in home blue and road white -- were
designed by Fleishman-Hillard's sports and creative
services teams in collaboration with the Blues.
Fleishman-Hillard, with its global headquarters in St.
Louis, also designed the home and away uniforms the
Blues wore from 1998-1999 through the 2006-2007
season. The Blues' colors -- blue, navy, gold and
white -- as well as the classic Blue Note crest remain
unchanged.

Phoenix
Coyotes Unveil New Uniforms (National Hockey
League)
September 14, 2007
The Phoenix Coyotes unveiled their new RBK Edge
uniforms on Saturday, Sept. 15 as part of the 3rd
Annual CoyotesFest at Jobing.com Arena. The Coyotes
joined the 29 other NHL clubs this season in wearing a
new technologically-advanced uniform system featuring
fabrics that are more form fitting and aerodynamic as
well as breathable and water repellant. The NHL and
Reebok worked together for more than two years to
update the NHL uniform in an effort to enhance player
performance and increase player protection and safety.
Through extensive research and testing, Reebok was
able to create uniforms using lighter fabric and
stretch material, including Reebok PlayDry™ and Bead
Away™ technologies, to offer more comfort and freedom
of motion for the players. The entire uniform system
was created with a more anatomical fit, integrating
better with the players’ padding and equipment, which
also enhances the range of motion.

Dallas
Stars Unveil New Uniforms (National Hockey
League)
September 14, 2007
The Dallas Stars today unveiled the hockey
club’s new jerseys, to be worn during the 2007-08
season. The new uniform design is part of the National
Hockey League’s launch of the new Rbk EDGE Uniform
System™, adopted League-wide for the coming NHL
season. Following more than two years of research and
development, new uniforms are being brought in to
enhance player performance and increase player
protection and safety. The NHL and Reebok worked
together to develop a new uniform system that uses
state-of-the-art materials that are more breathable,
more resistant to water absorption and offer a greater
range of motion. New Reebok Bead Away™ and PlayDry™
technologies work together to offer players a 14
percent reduction in pre-game jersey weight. The drier
uniform retains up to 76 percent less moisture
throughout the game. The sleek, new uniforms feature a
new look for the Dallas Stars on their dark sweater –
for the first time in the team’s history, a word-mark
is the primary emblem on the front of the jersey, as
the team’s home of “DALLAS” is cleanly presented
across the chest accompanied by the respective
player’s uniform number centered underneath. The Stars
and New York Rangers are the only two teams in the NHL
to feature a simple word-mark on the new sweaters. The
team has also returned to its primary color of black
for the dark jersey that was utilized during the
team’s first six years in Dallas from 1993-99. The
traditional Dallas Stars logo is featured on each
shoulder.

Buffalo
Sabres Unveil New Uniforms (National Hockey
League)
September 14, 2007
The Buffalo Sabres will sport a new look for
the 2007-08 season. The Reebok Edge uniforms, unveiled
at last year's NHL all-star game, will be the new
standard for all NHL teams. Although no modifications
have occurred to the Sabres logo or overall
appearance, there are a few other differences. The
"jersey consists of lightweight advanced materials to
provide increased range of motion, ventilation,
durability and comfort," according to Reebok's Web
site. The sweaters are also designed to be
moisture-repellent. The uniforms previously used by
the league retained moisture through sweat, water
bottles and ice. The new jerseys have incorporated
"bead-away moisture repellent technology" resulting in
76 percent less moisture absorbed.
-
Chicago
Blackhawks Unveil New Uniforms (National
Hockey League)
September 14, 2007
There was a funny moment at the news conference
showcasing the Blackhawks new uniforms. Martin Havlat,
Brent Seabrook, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews were
modeling and considering the event was held on the
terrace of a popular Chicago restaurant, skates were
not an option. The choice of footwear among the
players was varied: Seabrook and Toews came out in
full uniform but wore sandals. Havlat wore white gym
shoes. Kane's choice? Crocs. Blue. Fans shouldn't
worry too much about the new uniforms--they're quite
similar to the old ones. They do look more modern and
have just some small changes along the bottom of the
shirt. "They had some interesting designs prior that
we weren't big fans of," Hawks general manager Dale
Tallon said. "I think we're one of the teams that
really fought hard to maintain [our old look]."

Owens to the core American values that embody
Bakersfield, our new colors represent what this city
is all about.” Swish, a fox indigenous to Bakersfield,
was awarded the mascot position after an extensive
interview process. The hiring became a slam dunk when
Jam officials read his application stating his
favorite colors are red, white and blue. When asked
how he felt about joining the Jam, Swish responded
with a thumbs up and then drained a three-pointer.

Los
Angeles Dodgers Unveil 50th Anniversary Logo
(Major League Baseball/National League)
September 12, 2007
It is 12 days away from the 50th anniversary of
the Dodgers' last game at Ebbets Field. And for five
decades now, what was Brooklyn's sad loss has been Los
Angelenos' happy gain. "Relative to Los Angeles, which
is the entertainment capital of the world, the one
true constant over the last 50 years has been Dodger
baseball," said former first baseman Steve Garvey, who
played such a big part in it. "For 81 days and nights
during the year, the Dodgers have entertained hundreds
of thousands of people. Movies come and go. TV series
come and go. But for Los Angeles, the Dodgers have
been the pinnacle." And so, with some panache and a
splashy Dodger Stadium press conference, the Dodgers
announced on Wednesday that the theme of the 2008
season will be a celebration of the 50 years they have
spent in the Los Angeles basin, the last 46 of them at
the ballpark carved into Chavez Ravine.

Burgundy/White game at the Air Force Academy.
Alongside Liles were Head Coach Joel Quenneville,
forward Milan Hejduk and former defenseman Curtis
Leschyshyn, each modeling a previous edition of an NHL
jersey worn during Colorado’s hockey history. The
Avalanche uniform is part of a league-wide uniform
innovation designed by Reebok in partnership with the

System, it’s the culmination of two years of research
and testing which placed performance and safety at the
forefront of the design process.

September 12, 2007

partnership with Reebok in developing a uniform to
meet the performance demands of today’s professional
athlete. This change adds an exciting twist on the new
uniforms that the Ducks unveiled prior to the 2006-07
season. “This is an exciting new technological
advancement made by the NHL,” said Anaheim Arena
Management and Anaheim Ducks Senior Vice President/CMO
Bob Wagner. “We think both the fans and players will

of William and Mary to Unveil New Athletics Logo
(NCAA)
September 7, 2007
The College’s logo committee is on pace to have
a proposal for the school’s new logo ready in time for
President Gene Nichol to unveil it at this year’s
Homecoming, should the President choose to do so. “I
think it’s fair to say that we’re going to be able to
[have the logo ready by Homecoming] without too much
difficulty,” Sam Sadler, vice president of student
affairs and committee chair, said. “It depends on
whether or not [Nichol] likes our recommendation, of
course.” The committee was formed after the College
dropped its appeal of the NCAA’s ruling that called
the Tribe’s feathers logo “hostile and abusive.”

Minnesota
Wild Unveils New Uniforms (National Hockey
League)
September 6, 2007
The Minnesota Wild announced a new, yet
familiar look on Friday when it unveiled its 2007
version of the RBK Edge uniforms. While all 30
National Hockey League teams will be playing with
newly-designed uniforms, some have made drastic
changes. The Wild has remained true to its original
design with several minor changes. The most notable
change appears on the team's Iron Range Red home
sweater, which will move up in status from the "third"
jersey to become the team's primary home sweater,
replacing the green from years past. That change comes
in the form of a new wheat-colored shoulder yolk and
the removal of the forest green striping at the waist.
The white road jerseys also stay close in design to
the original and feature narrower accent striping on
the sleeves and a new gold collar. The Wild, like all
NHL teams will not wear a third or “alternate “jersey”
during this first season of the RBK Edge uniform
system.

Norfolk
Admirals Unveil New Uniforms (American Hockey
League)
September 5, 2007
The collage of royal blue, sunflower yellow and
red on parade at Norfolk Admirals headquarters Tuesday
convinced long-time season ticket-holder Linda
Phillips of at least one thing about the 2007-08
season. This team won't sneak up on anyone. "They'll
definitely see us coming," Phillips said. That's one
of the statements Admirals officials targeted when
they designed the team's new jerseys, which were
unveiled Tuesday at Scope. "We wanted bright colors
and I believe that's what we've got," Admirals vice
president Mark Bernard said. "We're really excited
about it." The jerseys won't just look different,
either. Like all AHL clubs, the Admirals will sport
the lighter, more water resistant Reebok EDGE uniforms
which debuted in the NHL All-Star Game last season.
The battleship logo the Admirals have used since the
2004-05 season remains unchanged. The blue and yellow
captured elements of the original Hampton Roads
Admirals uniforms, while the red borrowed from the
Chicago Blackhawks-inspired colors worn by the AHL
Admirals the past seven seasons. This time, though,
instead of adopting the colors of Norfolk's new
affiliate, the Tampa Bay Lightning, the team decided
on a combination that is uniquely Admirals. Bernard's
hope is that, regardless of the team's future
affiliation, Tuesday will be the last time the
Admirals will have to discuss a change of colors.

Watch by Paul Lukas - "NFL Preview Edition"
September 5, 2007
The dog days of August have finally given
way to September, and that means it's time for the
NFL, which kicks off its season Thursday night. And
the season's biggest uniform change will be apparent
before the game even starts, when the captains meet at
the center of the field for the coin toss. That's
because team captains this year will be wearing a
special captain's patch on the upper-right chest area
(as you can sort of see here). The patches will be
color-coordinated to match each jersey, and the gold
star underneath the "C" marks the number of years that
the player has been a captain under the league's new
captaincy initiative.

Watch by Paul Lukas - "Back to School Edition"
September 3, 2007
Let's start with the good news: The University
of Oregon does not have new football uniforms this
season. You know things have gotten out of hand when
the lead item of Uni Watch's annual college football
preview column is something that didn't happen. But
that doesn't mean the minions at Nike haven't been
active -- they've been busy overhauling the look of
Oregon's other Division I-A school, Oregon State,
where they've managed to take a team that already
looked ridiculous and make it look, well, really
ridiculous. Yo, dudes, is that a sports bra you're
wearing or what? The rear view is none too flattering,
either. There's an FAQ page here, but the most
pressing question -- namely, how anyone could have
green-lighted this design in the first place -- goes
sadly unaddressed. (As an aside, Nike's obsession with
the state of Oregon becomes even more evident if we
expand our view to include Division I-AA. Check out
what they've done to Portland State, where Jerry
Glanville is now coaching, which of course means that
the team's green-based color scheme has been changed
to black. The most interesting detail: the center
spear logo on the helmet. The net effect: a cross
between a comic book and a video game, which pretty
much sums up where uniform design is heading these
days.)

Myrtle
Beach Pelicans Unveil 2008 All-Star Game Logo
(Carolina League (baseball))
September 2, 2007
At a press conference in mid-May, the Myrtle
Beach Pelicans (A/Atlanta Braves) proudly announced
that the 2008 California-Carolina League All-Star Game
would be coming to the Grand Strand. On Sunday
evening, the Pelicans unveiled the official logo for
the mid-summer classic, which will be played on June
24, 2008 at BB&T Coastal Field. The All-Star game logo
features a sparkling star outlined with the same dock
rope prominently featured in the Pelicans' primary
logo. A large Palmetto tree, the state tree of South
Carolina, emerges out of the bottom right corner of
the star, giving the logo a distinct local appeal. The
colors used in the logo derive from the Pelicans
current logo, featuring Pelicans Blue, Midnight Blue,
and Sun Gold, with a touch of white.
